Artist and EMBLAMAR Studio founder Katrin Throvaldsdottir has been creating stunning masks using kelp for many years, using a design technique she developed and fine-tuned over time.
The masks, made entirely using kelp from the Icelandic ocean, sometimes adorned with paint and details but mostly just pure seaweed, have a haunting beauty, similar to the mummification seen in various ancient cultures.
To celebrate these amazing works of art the studio commissioned photographer Magnus Andersen to archive the collection, with help from the studios’ Creative Director Charlie Strand. As ongoing collaborators, together they found a technical solution similar to Lightbox photography to showcase the masks in all their glory, showing every detail of texture and colour and bring them alive in photographic format.
These images capture the unique style of masks – and form the part of an upcoming exhibition as well as an art book.
